SRI JAGADDHATRI DEVI PUJA

Sri Jagaddhatri Devi is a form of Goddess Durga. Jagaddhatri Devi is the Goddess who holds the world together. She bestows boons and grants according to the circumstances of the Sadhakas (spiritual aspirants) for their yogic elevations. Her traditions are derived from the Shakteya tantra where she is a symbol of Satva Guna or Satvic, beside Durga and Kali, who are worshipped as Rajasic and Tamasic deities/tatvas.

According to the Puran, Sri Jagaddhatri Devi is depicted as being in the complexion of the early morning sunrise, three eyes and four arms, in which she is holding a Chakra, Shanka (conch), bow and arrow.  Her color is red or white, hence worshipped with red or white flowers. Devi is nagajagopavetta, the symbol of yoga where nagraj has become the sacred thread for Devi. She rides the lion, standing on the dead elephant demon, Karindrasura. Sri Rama Krishna Paramahamsa once said “Jagaddhatri arises in the heart of a person (sadhaka), who can control the frantic elephant called mind” – Gospel of Ramakrishna. Later in Sri Ramakrishna mission, Sri Jagaddhatri puja initiated by Sri Sarada Devi which is now being observed far and wide. Soon after the victory over Mahishasur, the Devatas became slightly egoistic. They thought because of giving their ayudhas (weapons of power) to Durga all the demons/asuras were vanquished. To make them understand that the Maha Shakti (primordial power) is alone behind every action, Brahman appeared before Devatas in the form of Yaksha. Surprised by the presence, one by one they approached Yaksha. First Vayu came and Yaksha asked what he can do. Vayu replied that he could throw away gigantic mountains and tumble the world. Yaksha then placed a small piece of darbha (holy grass) and asked him to move it. Vayu utilized all his powers but alas he could not even displace it. Then Agni, Varuna and likewise all the other Devatas failed to do so. Then it dawned on them that their powers are really not their own but derived from the supreme power (Maha Shakti) who is protecting Mother, holding her entire creation and is worshipped as Jagaddhatri. Anyone who attends or performs Jagaddhatri puja becomes egoless and with Vimala Gnana (enlightened wisdom), becomes a sadhaka who serves the world, which is the manifestation of the Brahman. Sri Jagaddhatri Devi puja at Sree Vijaya Kali Ashram will be conducted every year.
